Take a moment to reflect... Built in the 1920s, the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on the National Mall has been the backdrop for many historic U.S. events. In 1939, singer Marian Anderson was not allowed to sing in the Constitution Hall, because of her race. Instead, she sang on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Easter Sunday. In 1963, the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom held a large Civil Rights rally around the reflecting pool. This was where Martin Luther King gave his "I Have a Dream" speech to a quarter-million people standing around and in the Reflecting Pool.

Getting to Know DC- The Winston Churchill Memorial Statue. Just a short walk up Massachusettes Ave, you will find the statue installed outside the British Embassy. Churchill had a close tie to DC at the start of WWII. He shivered as he stood in the South Portico of the White House at twilight on Christmas Eve in 1941. It was less than three weeks after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and the visiting British prime minister had joined President Franklin D. Roosevelt to light the national Christmas tree on the South Lawn. “This is a strange Christmas Eve,” Churchill told a quiet crowd of about 30,000 people. “Almost the whole world is locked in deadly struggle, and with the most terrible weapons which science can devise.”

Getting to Know DC- The Continuum Sculpture. Located outside the National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C., the Continuum Sculpture is a public artwork by Charles O. Perry. Perry was a Yale trained architect who retired from architecture in the early 1960s to concentrate on becoming a sculptor. The sculpture is made of bronze and sits atop a granite plinth, stands almost 14 feet tall, weighs 7,000 pounds and depicts a mobius strip. Mobius strips are purely mathematical shapes that are orientated in such a way as to only have one surface, or side. Thousands of visitors to the museum pass the massive sculpture each day, some of whom may understand the scientific principles behind the design, but many that just enjoy the intricate and beautiful design.
