Menorah Lighting Ceremony and National Christmas Tree
The holidays are here! Channukah has started and Christmas Eve is a few weeks away! Tonight, we bring you a special history and performances highlighting the seasonal aspects of both holidays.
Come along on this holiday walking tour and hear about Christmas at the White House, carols and pageants at the “Church of the Presidents”, and why Washington’s earliest residents never put up a Christmas tree. The walk will continue at the National Menorah (see below) behind the White House.
CHANUKAH MENORAH LIGHTING CEREMONY: After some brief discussion of Chanukah celebrations in Washington, we’ll get special seating for the official annual Chanukah Lighting Ceremony at the National Menorah. We’ll hear from local and natinoal leaders, enjoy Chanukah songs, and enjoy a special ceremony commemorating Chanukah.
CHRISTMAS TREE: Following the ceremony, we will then walk back along the lawn by the White House. View the huge National Christmas Tree where we will see over 50 individually-decorated surrounding Christmas trees dedicated to each U.S. state and territory. Warm yourself by the blazing Yule log while holding tasty hot chocolate (individually sold at the site).
