Holiday Season in Washington, DC

One of the most grand but not quite as well known sights to see in D.C. is the National Christmas Tree, which is setup in front of The White House, and turned on every night at dusk (stays lit until 10pm). The Pathway of Peace is also light up, which includes 56 smaller symbolic trees, all decorated with holiday cheer, surrounding the main tree. The decorations are unique, and musical groups perform most nights in December, making this a lovely event to attend each and every year.

If you’ll be traveling with kids, or are still a big kid at heart, the National Zoo has Zoo Lights all month long in December. The after-hours visit includes over half a million LED lights, animated displays, select animals on display in their exhibits, and live music. Fun for all and tickets are available now.

Located on 8th and F Streets NW, near the Verizon Center, there’s a daily (and nightly) Downtown Holiday Market. With so much to see and experience, this magical holiday marketplace is worth it for more than one trip. With over a 150 exhibitor and vendors, plenty of food, and live entertainment, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Double check the schedule to find events you’d enjoy seeing.

The CityCenterDC is another fantastic spot to get a major dose of holiday cheer. This downtown area is lit up with Palmer Alley’s signature stringed lights, while all the luxury shopping and restaurant destinations are right at your fingertips. Shopping includes Kate Spade New York, Allen Edmonds, and more. Restaurants include Fig & Olive, Mango Tree, and many others as well.

Last but not least, how could the holiday season be complete without some ice skating? These are our top three picks for lovely locations to skate this holiday season: Washington Harbor Ice Rink, the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden Ice Rink, and the Canal Park Ice Rink.
