Horace Poolaw of the Kiowa tribe began photographing family and friends across numerous tribes in the mid-1920s, sparking a career that lasted roughly 50 years. His work displayed everyday activities and momentous occasions, including weddings, funerals, parades and men being shipped off to war. Poolaw’s photos provide an in-depth and intimate look at a marginalized community that you won’t be able to experience anywhere else but the National Museum of the American Indian.
